Orchid Lover's Retreats are for those seeking an educational and inspiring eco orchid tour with holistic healing advantages in a package that includes fine food, holistic additions, educational workshops and scenic tours with amiable hosts who are experts in their fields. Keala's former father in law Rick Richardson, who for years was associated with the New Port California Orchid Society, inspired Keala to offer this insider's view into the wholesale orchid world of the Big Island of Hawaii. Rick would come over every year with his lovely wife Jane and he would sneak his way into as many orchid grow operations as he could during his stay because his fascination with the process of growing orchids was so acute. Rick's eyes would dance with glee whilst whistling cheery tunes during every orchid escapade. For those of his family members who were dragged around during these forays it was more than boring and often embarrassing when we would be escorted ( sometimes politely, sometimes not so politely) from the premises of the big time grow operations and wholesalers. Rick would be unabashedly chattering about what so special about THAT grow operation, as we all beat a hasty retreat back to the rental. ORCHID LOVER'S RETREATS start on Sunday with a check in of 3 pm and end on Friday morning with an 11 am checkout. We use very nice vacations rentals which have shared living quarters, so quiet times from 10 pm to 8 am and common courtesy for your fellow retreaters are requested.CLICK HERE TO SEE SOME EXAMPLES OF THE PLACES WE USE. Christopher loves his wine so every night there is a different wine selection(s) guests may try from his friend Randy's GRAPES Top Wine Choices. So a good time is had by all. Of course you can have a tropical fruit juice or 100% grown Hawaiian coffee instead. It's all very good.

ALOHA ORCHID LOVER'S will be staying in Vacation Rentals located in lovely Kapoho on the very east tip of the Island of Hawaii. You will have a private room (unless you opt for a masters suite) and share bathrooms and living quarters with your fellow ORCHID LOVERS. Kapoho is noted to have the cleanest air in the world and has spectacular sunrises such as the one over the tide pools on the right. It is home to the marine sanctuary tide pools filled with colorful tropical fishes and living coral for easy access and safe swimming and snorkeling. SO, JUST WHO IS THIS GUY WHO'S GOING TO BE GIVING YOU THE ORCHID VACATION OF A LIFETIME?
Christopher Lichty was born in Michigan where he received a degree in Mechanical Engineering. For a short while he toiled in the automotive engineering field before deciding to leave cold, snowy Michigan for good. In 1980 he moved to Honolulu, where he took classes at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, School of Tropical Agriculture, receiving a Bachelors degree in Horticultural Science in 1985 and a Masters degree in 1988. His Master’s degree work was with the team that eventually developed a genetically modified Papaya that is resistant to Papaya ringspot virus, saving a dying industry. In 1988 Christopher became the Horticulturalist for the world’s largest Anthurium farm. The Anthurium industry was in trouble with a bacterium (Xanthomonas campestris pv dieffenbachiae) that was completely fatal to the Anthurium plants, with no cure. Christopher was instrumental in developing cultivation techniques and farming practices that reduced the spread of the disease, and was one of the first to put Anthurium plants in vitro, assuring disease free stock. In 1992 Christopher set out on his own, at first producing disease free Anthurium plants for the industry, then building his own cut flower nursery. In 1998 he began producing orchids as potted blooming plants, trying Dendrobiums, Vanda, Mokara and Phalaeonopsis before settling on Intergeneric Oncidinae for his main orchid production. PS. this hot in from his fiance - Keala, Christopher is a fine chef who loves to compliment his creations with a nice red wine, but you can have white wine or sip a tropical fruit juice instead. As you can pretty much tell from his bio, he has some gray matter between those large ears and can carry on a decent conversation with just about anyone who would like to engage him, remembering of course, politics and religion are usually left best for introspection and not the dinner table.
